ECA AML and Compliance Workshop 2024

The European Casino Association hosted its 5th Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Workshop, focusing on addressing critical questions and issues arising from the practical application of national AML regulations in European casinos. This event provided updates on the implementation status of the new EU AML regulations and discussed the establishment progress of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA).

The workshop also featured insights from experts across various sectors significantly impacted by AML regulations, encouraging a comprehensive and diverse dialogue on this important topic. Efforts were made to include a Europol representative to present a holistic view of the European landscape in the ongoing fight against money laundering.

As the final program took shape, participants were invited to propose topics they wanted to explore further, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. This workshop represented a unique opportunity to delve into AML regulations, exchange best practices, and actively contribute to shaping the future of AML protocols within the casino industry. Attendees' engagement and input were invaluable in reinforcing a unified approach against money laundering.

Questions:
How does Europol evaluate the risk of infiltration or ownership by organised crime groups for slot machines outside of casinos?

EU AML regulations for casinos are currently too generic. We believe that increased collaboration between regulatory institutions and casinos is essential to develop more specific and effective guidelines that protect our business interests without imposing unnecessary burdens. How could this best be achieved?

In our opinion, the regulations issued by AMLA should be the same for all EU countries, i.e. they should not offer the possibility of being reinforced by individual countries. Does Europol see it the same way?

Preventing illegal gambling is the biggest challenge for us in the fight against money laundering and the prevention of gambling addiction and its social consequences. For over 20 years, Europe has been unable to achieve a regulated situation. How can illegal gambling finally be brought to an end?
